Advanced Techniques #
Normal Mapping #
Normal mapping is a technique used to add surface detail without increasing the polygon count of a 3D model. It works by storing a normal map, a texture containing normal vectors for each pixel, alongside the model’s geometry. The normal map provides information about the surface orientation at a much finer level than the underlying polygon mesh. In the pixel shader, the normal vector from the normal map is used instead of the interpolated normal from the vertex shader. This allows for the simulation of bumps, dents, and other fine surface details. The normal from the normal map is then used in lighting calculations.
Implementation:
Load Normal Map: A normal map texture is loaded and sampled in the pixel shader using a sampler. Normal maps typically store normals in a range of [-1,1] for each component (x, y, z).
Transform Normal: The sampled normal needs to be transformed from tangent space (the space of the normal map) to world space. This requires a tangent-to-world matrix, which is usually calculated in the vertex shader and passed to the pixel shader.
Lighting Calculations: The transformed normal from the normal map is then used in the lighting calculations (diffuse, specular) instead of the interpolated vertex normal.

Shadow Mapping #
Shadow mapping is a technique for rendering shadows in a scene. It works by rendering the scene from the light source’s perspective, storing the depth values into a depth texture (the shadow map). Then, during the main rendering pass, for each pixel, the shader checks the depth in the shadow map at the corresponding pixel coordinates in light space. If the pixel’s depth is greater than the depth stored in the shadow map, it’s considered to be in shadow.
